n Why Customer Spotlights Rock! | The Anti-Marketing Manifesto

Happy Friday!

This week, I pored through dozens of customer testimonials…

Think about the last time you got a positive testimonial. Maybe it was five minutes ago. Or five days ago.

A happy customer is usually so excited, they spew their positive feedback to you without giving it much thought.

This is great.

While their spirit of enthusiasm makes for awesome raw material… that alone doesn’t do your business justice.

It doesn’t count as “thoughtful content that MEI’s.” (Motivates, educates, inspires.)

(It’s like assuming a pile of wood will automatically translate into a house.)

I’m amazed at how often businesses simply “copy and paste” their customer testimonials, without going any deeper.

That’s a wasted opportunity.

In most cases, readers’ eyes glaze over the pasted text… there is no emotional connection or resonance, because it’s too surface-level.

It’s better to flesh out a stellar customer’s story… so that others can relate to it on a deep level.

Keyword: relate.

Other keyword: deep.

Think about it. Do YOU personally buy from people whom you relate to?!

…Do you ever buy from someone where you can’t f#cking relate to the person selling the product?!?


Happy customers help do the heavy lifting for you… because other people will be able to relate to their story, if you put it into a spotlight format. (Obstacle –> journey –> hero overcomes.)

Testimonials can be faked.

But a story (i.e., spotlight) requires depth, breadth, and a real human being on the other end who gives a shit.

Readers can tell the difference!

Plus, by taking the time to do spotlights, you’re showing everyone that you actually care about your customers.
